John 15:15 – No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
This verse is one that I constantly reflect on, and it warms my heart. Many of us tend to think of God as this impossible to please ruler that waits to strike us down. That he is a mystical figure with a score sheet. And on that score sheet, we can never uncover ourselves. I used to think that way until I ran across this verse years ago in Bible studies with my brother. It cheered my heart. Read it one more time.
Know that Jesus is exposing himself to us to say I am holding nothing back. I’m not an iron fist ruler, I want you to know everything. I’m giving you the playbook to success if you will just adhere to these rules, you’re good to go. It’s like an inside man at work or getting a little side of favoritism from a friend when it mattered. Jesus is assisting us with victory. There is no secret route to heaven, simple submission to the faith and aggressive pursuit of it on a daily basis.
Approach with caution:
James 4:4 – You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
While we tend to love the world we live in, let us remember to not friend the world or the acceptable culture. We are not of this world, we are but temporary residents. Remember to be friends with God and serve his Kingdom, rather than serving at the pleasure of this world, for that we will be rewarded.
